Plan your visit to Accra’s National Museum of Ghana with our detailed itinerary. Discover archaeological artifacts, ethnographic exhibits, and nearby cultural sites to immerse yourself in Ghana’s heritage. On Friday, 10th June 2022, the renovated National Museum of Ghana was officially re-opened by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Originally inaugurated in 1957, the same year Ghana gained independence, the museum is the oldest and largest museum in the country. It was closed to the public in 2015 to undergo extensive renovations aimed at restoring its structure and modernizing its exhibits.

The rehabilitated museum now features additional artifacts and exhibits, enhancing its role as a repository of Ghana’s rich history and cultural heritage. Located in Accra, the museum houses a diverse collection of historical artifacts, archaeological finds, ethnographic materials, and contemporary artworks. It provides visitors with insights into Ghana’s past, from the pre-colonial era to independence and beyond, as well as showcasing broader African cultural and historical narratives. The re-opening marks a significant milestone in preserving and promoting Ghana’s history, offering both locals and tourists a deeper understanding of the nation’s heritage.
